30 Credit Media Homework (Marina) (September 2018 - July 2019
11/09/18 Unit 2: Music Video (Undertaking Research)
In this day and age music videos have become more personal and more about what artists want to achieve in life. In music videos, this is highly shown via hidden subliminal messages throughout the music video or other such items of interest, especially religious undertones. This is due to the fact that audiences are becoming more aware of what they see and hear in music videos whether it is derogatory or not. Brands use this as a way to subtly advertise their product because in total when you compare the number of people who watch a 30 second ad before a youtube video to them seeing it in a music video there is quite a big difference, especially re-established music videos as music videos bring in the highest ad revenues ever seen and not to mention export revenues. Music videos have not only become a way for the artists to connect more with their audience via "fourth wall breaking" or "Subliminal messages" it has also become an industry where music videos have pulled in the highest amount of income alone standing at a grand total of £2.5 billion. Not only that but due to the extremely high demands for new music videos it has supported over 142,208 people find their jobs in the music career which helps to push the music career further.
That is what I would like to portray in my music video. I feel that to create a highly viewed music video they need to be important artistic tools and ideal marketing devices for branded content. (Studiobinder.com) What also helps to elevate the music video is the lyrics of the song which will help the artist decide what sort of music video they should do. The song I would like to do for my music video would be called "lettin go" by Janelle Monae. I have chosen this song because it has a very powerful message that I think kids/young adults our age can closely relate to and use it as something for them to look up to. This would also link to the trends and target audience that the music industry has recently adopted over the last 2 years.

12/09/18 Initial Research for a new film Magazine
What is the purpose of your research secondary?
The purpose of my secondary research is to find out what draws people in to reading certain types of film magazine ( Is it the cover of films?, The competitions? or Just plainly the actors or actresses on the covers?) It will also help me work out what the target audience for certain magazines and what sort of features the magazines contain.
Conducting research on current film magazines
While conducting research I found out that people tend to read magazines that portray certain themes Of films each time (sci-fi, romance, comedy, biographical etc.) All of the research I have collected help to highlight the fact that people tend to read magazines that have been around for quite a while. Now I have researched quite a few film magazines and found out that around 65% of ’film magazines’ also range into political and social terms so I excluded them for the purpose of sticking to strictly the film industry (Vanity Fair and Time). The two magazines I have chosen to compare are Empire and The Hollywood Reporter.
Empire
The Empire magazine itself has amassed such an amazing amount of monthly readers with people buying extra copies to keep plus re-read. Now the Empires first issue was released in the summer month of July 1989 in the united kingdom (Britain) and it's categories mainly range from cinematography and film. The magazine frequently releases issues monthly, producing better and better issues by the month making this magazine a very enjoyable read and somewhat age-friendly depending on what topic of film they are doing.
The Hollywood Reporter
The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, has been around for 88 years and still producing the best content it has ever produced (in my opinion). The first issue was released on the 3rd of September 1930 in the sunny area of Los Angeles, California. Now, this magazine directly reports everything it can do so with the entertainment industry, from scandals to new and upcoming films and actors and actresses making this magazine a really intriguing read and might I add quite a good source for entertainment news.

Analyzing and comparing magazines
Both magazines have the same sort of content with some variations to the way they are explained but that is normal as to not deal with plagiarism infringements etc but either way, both have roughly the same amount of contests, interviews and film reviews to help them keep up with the changing audience and them suite it around that making the top quality magazines. Now the covers of both of the magazines vary drastically. Empire goes for more of a bold look that is true eye candy. they use very bright and bold colors to exaggerate the cover even more. I also love the way that they fit in with both of the cover themes (Star Trek Into Darkness). What also makes it stand out more is the shiny lettering they use to make there magazine title scream from the shelves for you to buy them. Whereas The Hollywood Reporter goes for a more posh and sophisticated look which goes well with the gentle colors they use and vivacious blacks portrayed. Their title for their magazine is very intricate making the magazine seem more aimed towards an older generation as it does not contain that eye candy that the younger audience looks for. Empires center page featured the film Star Trek into darkness with the main villain and hero (Played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine) is center page looking dark and scary but also drawing the reader in as they begin to become more intrigued at the contents of the magazine. The February edition of Empire has a center page spread of the film Star Trek into darkness with a shared frame of the film featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine as Kirk and John Harrison, this makes the magazine even more intriguing for readers to read and get involved in. The center page for The Hollywood Reporter is just an article about a woman who is overcoming the fear of her darkest role yet, now once again this magazine would be for a more of a sensible audience than a wide range of viewers/readers as not many people under the age of 25 would be interested in reading it. Empire has a lot of adverts advertised towards Both genders (depending on the theme on the magazine) this is due to the fact that most of the magazines tend to depict what they think will intrigue the reader or their interests, for example, games, films or any either type of interesting content. Whereas The Hollywood Reporter has more sophisticated advertisements that are relevant to the target audience, they could be perfume adverts, Holidays to clothing adverts etc.

25/09/18 Film and TV Magazine Questionnaire
Synopsis
The Film Magazine that I wish to produce will be bold and exciting, intriguing people to want to read my magazine. The style of the magazine will be changed for each of the new themes that occur every two weeks (as this will be a fortnightly released film magazine, that will feature films and tv shows from the two weeks prior to release.) Giving readers a fresh new feel into the word of cinema and tv. There will be plenty of contests that they will have a chance to win an exclusive access with their favorite actors and actresses and behind the scenes access as well. This magazine will entice the reader into wanting to read further into the magazine and buy another issue.
Questionnaire
What name do you think sounds good for a film magazine?- The name that everybody liked the best was Block Buster as it is a very Limited name and would only focus on the Film genre / Industry. I find that this result for the film magazine title is very intriguing as many others had very low scorings such as Picture Perfect and Film Fanatic etc. Whereas the two main chosen ones where Block Buster and Cineflicks. Based on this analysis I can be safe to say that even though Block Buster had a higher success rate than Cineflicks, it could still work either way (Title wise). In my opinion though i have chosen to do Cineflicks because it has a very professional look to it and will match any theme the magazine brings.
- Romance Films
- Dramatical
- Horror
- Comedy
- Animation
- Pornographic Film
- Action Films
- Fiction
- Documentary films
- Adventure Films
- Biographical Films
- This was a very Intriguing piece of work as well because a lot of the genres I expected to get picked were picked the least of example: Animation, Adventure, and fiction. Again the 2 top picked genres where horror and Action Films. I think this is possibly due to the higher increase and popular demand in said genres throughout the years as these genres have got better. I have decided to go with the theme of Biographical fiction which i think in my opinion is a very interesting road to go down and would go against the research i first had.
Akash: 17's to 25-year-olds it will appeal to.
Ram: All age ranges.
Abigail: Action Film Fans.
Donnie: Young Adults.
Yannie: Older People interested in movies.
Shante: Young people.
Josh: Avid film fans who are always looking for information on the newest movies.
Devon: A young Demographic 15-21.
Poppie: Fans of films.
Jesse: Old men.
- Now this section of the quiz is where it got harder to figure out what demographic group would read my film magazine as everyone had their own idea of who would read said Film magazine. But I have the idea to make it available for all age ranges to read whether young or old as no matter what age a person is my Film magazine would suit anyone.
What do you think the entertainment Value of the film Magazine will be like?
Akash: Loads of colours and eye attractive.
Ram:
Abigail: It should be very interesting and compelling.
Donnie: High.
Yannie: Good.
Shante:
Josh: Highly entertaining.
Devon: Very entertaining.
Poppie: Very entertaining for viewers/ readers to read.
Jesse: Yes I think it will succeed.
- This question is kind of hard to determine the answer to as many people got confused on what the question meant, Due mainly to the fact I may not have explained it properly to them. but so far everyone has put down that it should be either high or good. Whereas others have put it down as highly entertaining or very entertaining but either way, I think that I should have explained the question better to get more on point answers that I could use to help me with my research a bit more.
Akash: It should Include pictures and writing for ages 17-25.
Ram: Summary and Information about the film.
Abigail: Yes.
Donnie: Yes.
Yannie: Yes.
Shante: Yes.
Josh: Yes.
Devon: Nope.
Poppie: Yes.
Jesse: Yes.
- Everybody who answered agreed that contests should be included in the Film magazine as it would excite the reader by the fact they have a chance to win a prize or such other item. This is a very good sign as to me it seems that the more contests a magazine obtain the more intrigued a reader will be.
Akash: Big titles and a main Character to the Front cover.
Ram:
Abigail: Anything professional yet legible.
Donnie: Big and bold.
Yannie: Big Fonts.
Shante: Bold texts that stand out from the rest of the page.
Josh: Anything simple yet appealing.
Devon: Italics and bold
Poppie:
Jesse: Comic Sans.
- Many people agreed that the fonts should be Bold and Big as to stand out from the rest of the page which is what I had originally hoped for as to adopt the style of magazines such as Empire and Film. I am also grateful that everyone gave me ideas for Fonts as well that they would be interested in seeing on the front cover of my Film magazine. I think that i will go for more of a professional font though as i wish to make this magazine look very top end of the market but for a really cheap price.
Should there be a few Narrative questions in this film magazine?
Akash: Yes to make it interesting.
Ram: Yes.
Abigail: Sure.
Donnie: Yes.
Yannie: Yes.
Shante: Yes.
Josh: Yes.
Devon: Yes.
Poppie:
Jesse: Yes.
- Almost everyone agreed that my film magazine should have a few narrative questions to help explain the film that I wish to do and to help get more information out to the readers about actors/actresses and films.
What do you think the premise of this film magazine is?
Akash: To earn money and to make the magazine available in local shops.
Ram: What the film is about.
Abigail:
Donnie: To promote and advertise but to also entertain.
Yannie: New Movies.
Shante:
Josh:
Devon: To promote upcoming films and inform people about them.
Poppie:
Jesse: To educate people about films.
- Again I think many people got confused over what this question meant, but I do have a slight consistency over the answers I had received, Which I must admit is a very pleasing sign for me to see as it will be much easier for me to pick up results from this bar chart.
Akash: Yes.
Ram: Yes.
Abigail: It should appeal to a wide target audience.
Donnie: Yes.
Yannie: Yes depending on what the theme is.
Shante: Yes, it should appeal to all the audiences.
Josh: The magazine should be accessible to everyone.
Devon: Yeah it should appeal to everyone.
Poppie:
Jesse: Yes.
- I am very pleased that everyone thought that my magazine would be gender and age appropriate which is really good news to hear as that means that my synopsis was very well written and people thought that it was suitable for reading.
Akash: Yes it will be Interesting to see.
Ram: No.
Abigail: Yeah.
Donnie: I don't read, but I will look at it.
Yannie: Yes.
Shante: Yes.
Josh: Yes.
Devon: Yes.
Poppie:
Jesse: Yes.
- I am very pleased that people thought that my magazine was that good (via the synopsis) that they would read the magazine if it was actually published. It means that my magazine meets the criteria that they find really investing to view and read.
Overall I think that my magazine would please the public audience visually and internally via the synopsis which the public red before taking the questionnaire so that they would get a better understanding of what my magazine is and what it is about. I am really pleased i won't have to change the bases of my magazine as many people liked it overall.
9/10/18 Design Your Cover Page And Contents Page
Cover Idea 1:
- I really like the look of this Magazine cover as it has a very vintage and classy look that most people would go for/ look for when buying magazines, especially film magazines. The background matches up with the font and style of the magazine very well. I like the way the different fonts make the picture stands out more and also in a way helps it to blend into the magazine background much better.
Cover Idea 2:
- I really like this magazine cover more as it is more vibrant in a way to the eye and everything sort of fits into each other very nicely and i must admit that it does stand out a lot more than the other magazine cover that i did. Overall though i must admit that both of the magazine covers that i did are very appealing to the eyes but also easy on them as to not distract you from the more important information.
Contents Page:
Introduction
The purpose of this research was to help me understand the Concept and Effort needed to produce a magazine which people would like to read and would of course enjoy. Whether that be cover design to content that the magazine would contain, I needed to make be sure that everything would be suited to
the style I was going to write it as and to the target audience I had chosen.
Outline of my magazine and its purpose
The purpose of my Magazine "CineFlicks" Is to encourage readers to get into a more mature sense of film watching and also update people who are already common with said topics in the magazine. My other two purposes will be to explain the meaning of each film and how well it has performed in the box office and how; if biographical; this can relate to issues we are facing/ going through in our society today. The idea of my magazine came from magazines such as "The Hollywood reporter", "Vanity fair" and "Time".
Target Audience
The target audience for my magazine was originally going to be 25+ and think towards the end of the process I still stay to this decision as I stated before the magazine is aimed towards a mature audience in the sense that there will be sensitive issues in said magazines (depending on what films, be it biographical or not, I decide to do an article about) and topics that readers of a younger age may not understand and interpret wrong. I have also chosen this age range, as around this time adults will begin to start exploring other genres of film and media and begin to lose interest and get bored with the usual topics of film, so this is a way for them to venture out and explore more areas of film.
Production Costs
The production costs will be quite high due to the mass production of the magazine, distribution, writers needed, photographers and interviews needed to produce this; plus additional costs. This is where I needed to research this thoroughly because if I got certain costs wrong that could be a big impact on production and of course costs. Firstly i searched up the costs of mass production, distribution and start up costs of said magazine and due to today's market for magazines it would cost you a whopping £15,665.40. The writers would also need to be payed quite a hefty amount due to the amount that they would be writing meaning that it would come in at £3133.08. The photographs needed can sometimes vary in price due to who takes the photographs and how much it would cost for them to provide the images to us, but then saying that there is a set price on images which is £391.63. The interview cost can start from £1500 (as celebrities do not get paid for interviews as it is apart of their contract with the studio they are working with) but then it then depends on how long the said interview is. Lastly there will be of course hidden costs but I'm not able to pinpoint what the additional costs would exactly be. In tool the whole process would total to an outstanding cost of £20,690.11.
In conclusion my Magazine s going to be very pricey to produce and release due to today's fluctuation in magazine prices and manufacturing procedures which i must admit is he downside of the magazine but while saying that the upside to this is the distribution of my magazine to readers worldwide who will be enticed into reading a new edition of my magazine. This research has been very useful as it has made me understand the effort needed to do this sort of magazine, overall i must admit that if i ever did produce a magazine i would be ready.
Distribution of Magazine
My magazine would be distributed globally and sold in various shops (supermarkets, corner shops and so fourth) Meaning that it would be translated into many different languages to accommodate with the set countries language. The reason i would do it this way is due to the fact that it would gain world wide attention and cause more people to want to read it, rather than selling it locally. The reason that i would not sell it locally is the fact that it might not gain as much recognition that if it was sold nationwide, and figuratively might not have a chance to expand into further fields (via magazine).
Cost of my Magazine
The cost of my magazine would be around £5.00. This is due to the fact that after all the distribution and production costs i would need to make all the money back to be able to produce the next issue of my magazine. The price is also £5.00 because of the deals need to sell the magazines in the stores (meaning a set agreement needs to be set between the manufacturer and distributor where both sides earn money back from the magazines to help fund both sides).
How many times it would come out in a year
My Magazine will be released every two weeks as to keep up with the current films being released and keep everyone who buys and reads my magazine interested in current topics in the genre of film. It also gives the reader a fresh perspective on new and upcoming films that are due to be released that week or month. There will be a slight change in magazine distribution other the Christmas period and so forth due to sales across the world in rise (Black friday and Christmas sales) so the magazine will probably come out every week around that time. Otherwise it would be realised every two weeks.
Conclusion
09/01/19 Presentation based on Unit 2: Assessment 2.2
This is the final piece of work i needed to do to complete this Unit. It was Presentation based and base on the final stages of this assessment.
This is a very interesting and factual post! I've never listened to the song that you've mentioned here, but I shall have to check it out now!
