22/01/19       Film Studies: Analytical approaches to film

1) Give a short description of each and an example if possible from films of your choice:

Doctor Strange

Image result for doctor strange poster
Image result for doctor strange posterGenre Analysis: The film Doctor Strange is comprised of multiple Genres. Those are Action Film, Adventure Film, Fantasy, Superhero Movie and Science Fiction Film. The film, in My opinion, fills all of these genres in its own certain way and here's how/ why. The movie itself contains a lot of fast-paced moments that include fighting and "Inception" Style scenes that can leave you feeling quite exhilarated during intense moments. The film is also one of the most breathtaking science fiction and fantasy film ever to be produced due to the graphics used.

Content Analysis: Doctor Strange had to be advertised differently to the way normal films would be advertised to gain a high amount of public attention that other Marvel films had gained. It was still advertised via TV and Radio Broadcasts, including Billboards but the way the advert was produced was different from the way traditional adverts would be created. They would "In a sense" break the metaphorical 4th wall by posting ads that would reveal information about the plot of the film Via immersive media forms that were placed over social media. TV and Radio ads would be as intriguing as the film would be, drawing you in further Via sound and intriguing shots from the film.

Narrative Analysis: Dr. Stephen Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly earns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

The Imitation Game

Image result for the imitation gameImage result for the imitation game
Genre Analysis: The Imitation Game features two commonly used genres and those are Thriller and Drama. The film uses the two Genres to the highest standard drawing out each little piece of information to create not only a thrilling experience in cinema but one that will captivate you for years to come. The drama aspect of this film is heavily brought put by the actors and influenced by the true-life stories of Alan Turing himself. The thriller part of this film are parts that contain heavy amounts of pressure or scenes that can cause a sense of unease in the audience due to the mature nature that this film contains and the sheer raw form of emotions that come out of the actors as they portray such iconic idols from history.

Content Analysis: The advertisements that were shown for The Imitation Game had to be thought through very carefully due to the older but also the younger ticket buying demographic. This would cause quite a challenge due to the fact that not many young adults would find a biographical film set 70 years ago very interesting. So to get their attention (via the advertisement), the youth would be told that without Alan Turing; especially in our 21st century state there would have been no mobile phones, no computers or laptops and the recent advancement in artificial intelligence/ technology. Nothing that the youth of today desire would of ever been here without this man. What the adverts also do is praise the MAN, Alan Turing and the accomplishments he achieved while he was alive and by using quotes from the most influential people of the 21st century and how his technology has helped to change their lives and help them achieve their goals and dreams.

Narrative Analysis: In 1939 newly created British Intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes including Enigma-- which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing's team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyse Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and become hero's, but in 1952 the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is Gay and send him to prison.

Reception Studies

Media Reception Studies broadly surveys from the past century of scholarships on the way in which audiences make meaning out of mass media. It synthesises in plain language, social, scientific, linguistic and cultural study approaches to film and television as communication media.

Fan study

Fan studies is a field of scholarly research focused on media fans and fans culture.

Feminist Theory

Feminist Theory is the extension of feminism into theoretical, fictional or philosophical discourse. It aims to understand the nature of gender equality. A film that supports this theory is "suffragette".

Image result for suffragette film posterGenre Analysis: Suffragette is a breathtaking drama following the lives of the most influential female political advocates who were willing to lose everything in their challenge for egalitarianism. The movie itself ventures into the passion and grief of those women who wanted to ensure that women had the right to vote and make a dissimilarity in the world.

Content Analysis: The advertisements that were produced for "Suffragette" were well thought out and that is what made the trailer stand out even more. The trailer was aimed at both genders but for people of a mature age. The advert helped to not only interest people as a collective community to watch the film but also the advert helped empower women and show them that we can do anything that men can do and fight for what we desire just like any other man can. which to me I think is a wonderful message to send out to the women of our generation.

Narrative Analysis: In the early 20th-Century Britain, The growing Suffragette movement forever changes the life of a working mother and wife Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan). Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated Suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their Jobs, Homes, Families, and lives for a just cause.

15/02/19                          Film In Theory

Auteur Theory

  • Auteur Theory is derived from Astruc's elucidation of the concept of camera-stylo (Camera pen), holds that the director, who oversees all audio and visual elements of the motion picture, is more to be considered the "author" of the movie that is the writer of the screenplay.

Feminist Theory

  • Feminist Theory is the extension of feminism into a theoretical, fictional, or philosophical discourse. It aims to understand the nature of gender equality.

Queer Theory

  • Queer theory is a field of critical theory that emerged in the early 1990s out of the fields of queer studies and women's studies. Queer theory includes both queer readings of texts and the theorization of 'queerness' itself.

Marxism

  • The political and economic theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, later developed by their followers to form the basis of communism.

Image result for danish girlThe Danish Girl

The Danish Girl (Released on the 1st of January 2016) is a truly breathtaking Biographically correct film that explores the in-depth troubles (The fear of revealing that they wanted to change genders) of transgenderism. This film would fall into the Queer Theory due to the nature of the topic. This films Genre falls into two categories which are Drama and Romance.

Tom Hooper (The Director of this masterpiece) Has produced many stunning films that have won tons of awards and critical acclaims, but none have reached the quality and sheer precedence that this film has. This films intended audience would be people typically over the age of 18 (Due to the sensitive subject which they portrayed and the scenes of nudity present in the film). But the films intended audience doesn't just stop there as almost anyone who has an interest in art, transgenderism and the life of Einer Wegener (Later known as Lili Elbe).

The Fifth Estate

Image result for the fifth estate
The Fifth Estate (Released on the 11th of October 2013) is an intriguing film, that drags you in more and more into the mayhem while leaving you wanting more by the end of it. It is a film filled with the most demanded and inexpensive form of literacy to ever exist in this world... Truth. The Genre of this film falls into the category of Thriller and Drama, while still sticking wholeheartedly to the Biographical truth. This film falls into the Auter theory.

Bill Condon (The director of this intriguing film) Has produced films equivalent to the standard of this film, although many of his films have been poorly rated due to the storylines: which failed to communicate the story across. But even due to the that the characters and their personalities (which have been well developed) were able to pull the films up. But this film is one of the best come back films I have seen for a director. This film once again is not for the faint hearted and would/ is aimed for an 18+ audience once again due to the sensitive content of the film.

Pierrot Le Fou (Pierrot The Madman): Directed by Jean-Luc Godard

  • The film Pierrot Le Fou was created By Jean-Luc Godard and was solely based around an angry accusation that was based around him and his wife (Anna Karina). It also gives you an idea of the self-loathing and determination to destroy not only him but his lifelong work. The two fictions created by Balzac had united together in the mind of Godard’s memory to help create Pierrot le fou, a self-portrait of the artist on the verge of pushing a philosophical inquiry into formlessness, to an extremity that not only destroyed himself but also his Beloved wife. Pierrot le fou Contemplates appropriately extensive, cosmic and the quasi-metaphysical dreams of a Balzacian grandeur. The dream, and the art that is portrayed in a symbolic dream sequence, are instantly destroyed, by Marianne’s intrusive demands and, it turns out, her duplicity. She drags him back to the corrupt civilization he desperately tried to leave and pulls him from his contemplative isolation into a vortex of unwanted action and hatred. Pierrot le fou is filled to the brim with contemporary pieces of art and its attributes, from Marianne’s last name (and some original paintings to go with said name) to works by Picasso on the walls and seen in some of the insert shots all suggest that Godard embedded his film in a high artistic and literary heritage that transcended the protocols and habits of authentic and modern cinema. If Godard was at constant war with himself, he was in perfect sync with a time that was also at a grueling and deathly war with itself (The Vietnam War); and as his personal catastrophe copied those of the age, the age looked upon him as its reflection and it's only hope of Salvation. It was a shackle from which only far reaching measures would free him. The romantical sentiment transcended self-immolation with which Pierrot le fou would in the end foreshadow as an age of political violence and self-denial that would as a result come to take the place of a lost faith, especially in himself.

Why is Wes Anderson considered to be an Auteur?

Wes Anderson is a remarkable Director who has a career that spans more than 20 Years. His work has inspired many other directors of the 21st Century and left viewers of his films in awe at the use of his complexity and beauty due to the style of films he creates. His grave concern with the marginal and his increased desire to find the innocence in childhood is something not only astonishingly remarkable but powerful as well. This in my opinion suggests a breathtaking Auteur working at the height of his powers.

Filmography

Through his many years of work as an Auteur Director he has created many well known movies that have either been nominated or won many awards. Here I have only mentioned a few of the many films he has created such as:

Background/ Biography

Image result for wes andersonWes Anderson (Wesley Wales Anderson) Was Born on the 1st of May 1969 in Houston, Texas. As a child he began writing plays and making super 8 movies (Silent Movies). His films are known for their stories, visual style, and Soundtracks. As his time as a Director, he has won many Accolades (Excluding accolades his films have separately won) such as Silver Bear for Best Director, Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Director, MTV Movie Awards for Best New Filmmaker and New York's Film Critics Award for Best Director. To win a Multitude of awards for his critically acclaimed films makes him one of the most Critically acclaimed Auteur directors of the Modern century Putting him Up there with the greatest directors (Auteur) of all time.

Casting

Image result for castingWes Andersons casting choices (For a director I consider as an auteur) really intrigues me as he uses not only the same actors but actors that have gone through most of the traumas that certain characters they portray have which adds a layer of depth to his films. He also uses a multitude of different actors that can not only give you a breath of fresh air but bring new and often outstanding potential to his films. The actors that appear in his films quite often are Bob Balaton, Adrian Brody,, William Defoe, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray, Kumar Pallana, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton and Owen Wilson (Who also co-insides as a director/Producer for most of his films).  The way he corporates the actor's persona and the character's persona together is truly a sight to be seen as not only are they portraying someone that is not themselves but in terms, they are interlinking their two personalities together to make one entirely new person. It makes his work with the actors very strong as he pairs the two together to create a breathtaking piece of Artwork (In the terms of movie making).

Film Techniques

Image result for film techniquesWes Anderson has one of the most recognisable style of film making as a contemporary film maker. as a matter of faction can't watch a film with Futura font or scenes with accurate screen symmetry without immediately thinking of Moonrise kingdom Or The Grand Budapest Hotel. But why is that? His many Cinematic Trademarks and Filmmaker Signatures Have been examined since he first appeared on screen back in the 1990's, but with every new movie he releases, the alteration surrounding his methodology gets re-examined and reviewed to include his latest productions. InOther Words ,Wes Anderson has developed his cinematic linguistic's and Signature Style to such a degree that his productions has become its very own Signature and in its own right, and he has one of the most sought after and most recognisable signature that has ever hit the silver screens. Here are his Stylistic trademarks that he uses in his productions:

  • Micro-worlds (Which are known as "Shoe-box" sets)
  • Adults that are known for being Childlike or Have Childlike tendencies
  • Characters that begin to fall apart
  • Dysfunctional families
  • Escapism (In the most extreme ways possible)
  • A distinct pattern of linguistic vocals.
  • A Recurring cast (Bill Murray, Angelica Huston, Owen and Luke Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, etc.)
  • Art Nouveau colour palette (Using often very light and rustic looking collars that help to contrast out the story)
  • Distinctive camera angles
  • Slow motion for important moments or moments that are sad or intense
  • Music from the 60s and 70s
  • A production made within a production
  • Wes Anderson as co-writer, Producer, Director, Actor
  • The use of Futura font
  • Lots and lots of Binoculars in multiple shots
  •  Very Abrupt violence
  • A Chapter-like structure (like a book in certain aspects)
Many of the Stylistic traits stated here can of course be pinpointed to Back to Wes Anderson,  But perhaps the most marvelling Aspects of his film making, which is something no other director can copy or claim, is his ability to capture humanity in its most purist but also deadliest form and being able to translate that to his artificially constructed worlds. His individualistic style of film can take us high up into the heavens, where we can laugh hard and dream big the way that a pure child would, The affection and real emotional honesty brings us back down to reality where we can deal with our own compassion in the way that an adult naturally would.

Image result for fantastic mr fox filmDetailed Genre and Narrative

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Genre Analysis: Fantastic Mr Fox is a Film that includes two genres that Wes Anderson bases all of his films off of and that is "Children's Comedy" and "Adventure". In my opinion this is what makes his films very unique and heartfelt as it appeals to both the young and the old. This film would also fall under the genre of action as well as there are a lot of combat scenes in this movie.

Content Analysis: Fantastic Mr Fox is one of the few motion - Captured films that have received critical acclaim for the art style, story line and general use of actors. to portray the characters. The art Style is one not to be contended with and intrigues anyone that watches this film. The childlike nature of the film also gives the film a rare sense of innocence you never really see at all in modern day cinema. Not only that but the soundtrack also helps support the story line and make you feel included within the action. the elegancy of this film is not only mind-blowing but awe inspiring further proving my point about Wes Anderson being a 21st Century Auteur Director.

Narrative Analysis:  After 12 years of bucolic bliss, Mr. Fox (George Clooney) breaks a promise to his wife (Meryl Streep) and raids the farms of their human neighbors, Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Giving in to his animal instincts endangers not only his marriage but also the lives of his family and their animal friends. When the farmers force Mr. Fox and company deep underground, he has to resort to his natural craftiness to rise above the opposition.

Moonrise Kingdom
Image result for moonrise kingdom
Genre Analysis:  Moonrise Kingdom is  a romantic comedy (Based around first love in early teens) but does not follow all of the conventions normally seen in nearly all of  Hollywood's rom-com films. This Film uses dry comedic Humour in impossible yet plausible issues,  The film in itself is unique inits uses of mise-en- scene  naturalistic elements and surrealistic uses of imagery that  all work very well together to help redefine  the genre of romantic comedy. Moonrise Kingdom is a film that bases itself into the genre of romantic-comedy but with an independent filmmakers quirky artistic twist.

Content Analysis: Moonrise Kingdom has blown many people away with his use of symmetry and once again colour scheme and object placement in the film. The 1960's Theme gives this film  A very unique twist and intrigues the audience fully into the dysfunctional lives these two teenagers have. The family theme and the sense of trying to belong is very strong in this movie and between the two teenagers and it really brings home the message of children wanting to be free but based on principle are made to act like adults too early. It also links towards them not being able to experience childhood to the fullest due to their home lives and dysfunctional families.

Narrative Analysis:The year is 1965, and the residents of New Penzance, an island off the coast of New England, inhabit a community that seems untouched by some of the bad things going on in the rest of the world. Twelve-year-olds Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward) have fallen in love and decide to run away. But a violent storm is approaching the island, forcing a group of quirky adults (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray) to mobilize a search party and find the youths before calamity strikes.

Doctor Strange (2016)

Related image
Introduction
  • Doctor Strange was released worldwide on the 13th of October 2016 in Hong Kong and was made with the Marvel Studio's Production Company. Doctor Strange is set in many places, for example, Kathmandu (Nepal), London (United Kingdom) and New York City (The United States Of America). Doctor Strange; even though being filmed in 2016 is actually set in the year 2014. The Genre of this film is Fantasy/ Sci-Fi.
Image result for kevin feigeProducer
  • Kevin Feige had Produced Doctor Strange during his time with Marvel Studio's and a producer is someone who oversees's the film's production. They are either employed by a production company or work independently. Producers are there to plan and coordinate various aspects of the film's production such as selecting the script; Coordinating writing, Directing, and editing, arranging and financing. This is due to the fact that producers are the vital success to the final piece because as stated before they oversee every aspect of the production. During the process of creating this film, he had comics that he could base his film concept off of and he had the creator of The Marvel company, Stan Lee himself. With these two techniques available to him he was able to go crazy and create a jaw-dropping film that not only stuck to the original concept of the comics but also helped to excel it beyond belief making it a memorable superhero movie.
Target Audience
    Image result for target audience
  • For this film, the target audience was children over the age of 12 due to some violent scenes and the use of language. In my personal opinion this film can be viewed by any gender as I don't think that just one set gender could just watch this film; also can be viewed by anybody whether this is their type or not of the genre which is Science fiction/ Fantasy. Due to the concept and nature of the film; People already interested in and have been following it up until the point it had been released would of known much more about the process of the film than others, but saying that the actors that have been used in this film would have also brought their fandoms with them to produce a new wider spectrum of viewers as adored fans flock to see their favourite actors on screen. Yes the strategies used in this process were used effectively as they had spoken or viewed themselves to the correct audience who are intently interested in this form of film and had gained wide popular attention into he world of cinema and into the audiences mainly being focused at.
Marketing Strategies
Doctor Strange Movie Poster
    Doctor Strange Movie Poster
  • Doctor Strange had to be advertised differently to the way normal films would be advertised to gain a high amount of public attention that other Marvel films had gained. It was still advertised via TV and Radio Broadcasts, including Billboards but the way the advert was produced was different from the way traditional adverts would be created. TV and Radio ads would  as intriguing as the film would be, drawing you in further Via sound and intriguing shots from the film. Now due to certain countries having certain regulations on what can and can't be on posters and in advertisements  some of the posters for Doctor Strange are very minimalistic whereas others can be quite bold and eye grabbing. The red Carpet interviews/ Premiers where not Record breaking but big for usually released marvel films as this had never been done before in the marvel industry. Many red carpet interviews consisted of the usual questions involving the production of the film along with snipers from the film. But they where also asked various other questions to give the audience a better idea of the film and to get to know the actors much better. During the production of the film Marvels twitter was stocked full of little teasers or interviews done with the actors and the crew members. which also helped with interaction towards the audience.
How was the film distributed
Image result for distribution
  • Doctor Strange was distributed by the company the film is also owned by Walt Disney Studio's Motion Pictures. There are many benefits of using distributors but ultimately the main benefits of using a distributor are that they can sell your product is in this case film so much more than without the distributor also they also help to generate significant income quicker. This Company (Walt Disney) is such a large high grossing independent company but also one of the most known/ used distributors for films as they distribute so many amazing films and shows. The film opened in 3,882 Cinemas worldwide making it the 17th film that had the highest screen opening in the world due to the films high demand it generated. During its time in the box office, this film had made a whopping total of $677,718,395 which made it one of the leading movies of November along with "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them".

The Plan

Promotional Poster

Title and Tagline
  • Doctor Strange: A Polychromatic Of Butterflies
  • Genre: Science Fiction/ Fantasy
Synopsis: When Doctor Stephen Strange comes under attack by an unfamiliar entity for an unfamiliar reason, He and the Masters of The Mystics put their lives on the line to sever the connection between the mystic and his assailant. But, when grudges as deep as a soul itself come into play, will Doctor Strange and the Masters Of The Mystics prevail or die, trying to protect the people and things that they love.

Characters, Roles and Actors

  • Benedict Cumberbatch: Doctor Stephen Strange
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor: Mordo
  • Racheal McAdams: Dr. Christine Palmer
  • Benedict Wong: Wong
  • Tilda Swinton: The Ancient One
  • Mads Mikkelson: Caecilius
Classification
  • This film would be given the classification of 12A just like its predecessor this is due to the fact that there is a high frequency of fighting scenes containing damaging kicks and punches. The Violence is very Mystical looking and covered by light falls of magical sparks. Several of the lesser known and main characters are punctured with the use of there mystical weapons, and a character is seen falling from a high building hitting the concrete surface below. This does not contain any imagery of injury, but we do see the face covered in blood towards the end of the scene. Other monetary issues include quite mild bad language including: "Shit", "Asshole" and "Crap".
Intended Audience (Age, Gender, Interests)
  • This film can be viewed by children over the age of 12 with Parental Supervision; even though the film is not filled with anything that might disturb said child. Any gender can watch this film as well as a person of any Interests as this film is meant for everyone to watch just not a selected few.

The Proposal

  • My film poster appeals to the majority of my audience in the sense of character/ actor usage. For example stars like Benedict Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton would bring a massive amount of headstrong fans who would be willing to pay to see their adorned actors of choice. Not only that but it will bring in a whole bunch of newcomers that would like to experience this new fandom section of film and the culture that many bring with them. The actuality of the poster will also bring more people in as a film with a genre that is seen quite frequently, but the plot and theme of the film is rarely seen due to most directors/producers being afraid to pick up movie like this due to risk of failure, so to have a film out there that is uncommon and eye attracting (Via) the poster is quite phenomenal really. The use of colour and lighting in the poster is something quite magnificent as well as the use of images which not only yell the story of the film that they are about to go see but they let the audience portray how they think that the film will be played out and let them use there minds to interpret the outcome of this film with the use of the films title. The release date would be in commemoration to Stan Lee as without him this film would not be here, not only that but a day to also spend with fans of the genre who also would like to appreciate his work.
  • I would encourage the fandom to re watch the film after it has been released by adding plot twists that maybe the audience wouldn't be able to pick up on the first time but during more times that they've watched it they will see more clearly (In terms giving them a different viewing experience each time). Not only that but fan theories and their own stories will make them want to see the film more times as to grab more people into watching this film. The films various format releases are as goes:
United States Premier: 6th of November 2019
Worldwide Cinema Release: 12th of November 2019
DVD: January the 4th 2020
Online: January the 22nd 2020

  • We would Promote our film more by getting involved with other companies to help us launch the film to the audience. For example they could support our film by making custom clothing wear, Food Based items and household wear to further push the film out there. Also 3D Billboards and and social media accounts can be created to further intrigue the audience want to come and view the film.
  • Marvel Studios is a huge Production company which is based in Hollywood and has a huge income budget of  $21.38 Billion (£1,493,142,212,992.65). This company has many outstanding mainstream cinmea releases such as: Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 2, Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Age of Ultron. The company has been recently owned by The Walt Disney Company and now is apart of the multitude of companys owned by The walt Disney corporation. But saying that Marvel Studios has the tendency to do a lot of its major productions (Spiderman: Homecoming) with Sony Pictures.
