16/01/19                Unit 29: Music Video Research

On My Mind By Jorja Smith

Mis-en-scene: This video is set in a Brixton estate setting (Not 100% sure if that is where it was truly filmed). The First shot in the video is filmed outside of the Building that the song is mainly set in. The main setting (which is partitioned between two other settings) has the basic items that a house should/ would contain, there is also a DJ set in set scenes. There are also multiple shots in an elevator and in a car park in front of a red Renault.

Genre: R&B and soul.

Sticky By Ravyn Lenae

Mis-en-scene: This video has a recurring 80's vibe with a dance floor aesthetic. The video is filmed in quite a dark background with colorful Band stripes and bright focused lights. Plain and Neutral floors and backgrounds help the color aspects of the video stand out a lot more than if there was a whole load of color in the video. The video is also filmed in an 80's retrospective way.

Genre: R&B and soul

See you again By Tyler The Creator, Ft Kali Uchis

Mis-en-scene: This video starts off in an army boat (Cabin: Bedroom as such) Filled with other soldiers doing the usual day to day tasks. The camera then pans to the boat window where he looks out of it in a dreamlike sort of state. The next scene is set in a lifeboat where once again it would pan back to the army boat for where it would then go into a sort of awakening state where it is set in a forest like a place where it then ends in the artist turning into dust.

Genre: Hip Hop and Rap

24/01/2019     What are the Purposes of Music Videos?

In this day and age music videos have become more personal and more about what artists want to achieve in life. In music videos, this is highly shown via hidden subliminal messages throughout the music video or other such items of interest, especially religious undertones. This is due to the fact that audiences are becoming more aware of what they see and hear in music videos whether it is derogatory or not. Brands use this as a way to subtly advertise their product because in total when you compare the number of people who watch a 30 second ad before a youtube video to them seeing it in a music video there is quite a big difference, especially re-established music videos as music videos bring in the highest ad revenues ever seen and not to mention export revenues. Music videos have not only become a way for the artists to connect more with their audience via "fourth wall breaking" or "Subliminal messages" it has also become an industry where music videos have pulled in the highest amount of income alone standing at a grand total of £2.5 billion. Not only that but due to the extremely high demands for new music videos it has supported over 142,208 people find their jobs in the music career which helps to push the music career further.

That is what I would like to portray in my music video. I feel that to create a highly viewed music video they need to be important artistic tools and ideal marketing devices for branded content. (Studiobinder.com) What also helps to elevate the music video is the lyrics of the song which will help the artist decide what sort of music video they should do. The song I would like to do for my music video would be called "lettin go" by Janelle Monae. I have chosen this song because it has a very powerful message that I think kids/young adults our age can closely relate to and use it as something for them to look up to. This would also link to the trends and target audience that the music industry has recently adopted over the last 2 years.
